I was visiting my very dear friends in Chicago last week and was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from one my Wednesday-night girls…it was indeed Wednesday and she wanted to know if we were having Bible Study! I was sad to have to tell her that I was in Chicago and that we wouldn’t have Bible Study that night…and at the same time, I was so excited by how she was taking the intiative to be involved! The same girl (plus two others!) called again yesterday wanting to know if I was coming to pick them up for Bible Study. I was glad to say “yes”. 🙂
It ended up being just me and the four girls last night (couldn’t find the boys) and we talked about John 8. We talked about the freedom that comes in Christ and in His truth, freedom that is so desperately needed here. I had good one-on-one time with each of the girls (they took turns riding “shot gun” when one would be dropped off at home), hearing about their Christmas celebrations and their vacations from school. I was so glad to catch up with them and yet my heart ached to hear their stories. One of the girls told me about family members getting drunk, babies being neglected, and restraining orders being issued. Another girl told me that she got in a fight and broke a guy’s nose. Another girl’s mom has been very sick and may end up in the hospital for the 3rd time in a little over a month. These girls have some real hurts in their lives and they need to experience the hope that comes through freedom in Christ!
Keep praying for these girls and the rest of the youth on the reservation. I really believe that the Holy Spirit is moving in here and that He is raising up a generation of Native Americans who know and claim His truth!
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
