It’s been a different week here due to way-below-zero temperatures (-30 degree temperatures and -50 degree wind chills) which resulted in no school for 2 days, no car (it wouldn’t start), and no Wednesday night youth group at Tokio. The two days of freezing cold and no school were spent inside drinking coffee, preparing Bible study on John 11, writing notes to loved ones, and enjoying some down-time with my “family” here in Oberon.
Things have started to warm up and get back to normal since school–and my car!–have both started again. 🙂
As I mentioned, we didn’t have youth group this week due to the severe cold, but I got to see almost all of the youth group kids (plus some) at the big game last night. Four Winds is the Tribal school on the reservation and they have had an incredible basketball team for the past few years. Warwick is the only other high school on the reservation and they’ve got a pretty good team, too. Last night the Warwick Warriors traveled to Fort Totten to take on the Four Winds Indians…I knew it was a game that I couldn’t miss! Most of the kids from the Tokio youth group go to school in Warwick and I know quite a few of the kids at Four Winds (including one of the starting basketball players), so I had a terrible time deciding where to sit and which team to cheer for. I brought three girls with me to the game and one of them is a student at Warwick, so that’s where we ended up (although I did have to clap for Four Winds when my starter-friend scored!).
The basketball games are great entertainment, but they’ve also been a great way to get connected in the community and build relationships with the kids. There are only a couple of weeks left in the season, but I’m planning on getting to a few more games!
Here’s a picture of the packed stands at last night’s game!
I almost forgot…
Four Winds won!
